PANGOS ALL-AMERICAN CAMP
2011
SCOUTING REPORT
By Jeremy Orr, Head Scout
The Pangos All-American Camp always has ton of top talent from around the country but for the 2011 Pangos All-American Camp having the consensus Top Three players in the nation attending made this years camp a special one. The top three players being Andre Drummond a Center from Connecticut, Shabazz Muhammad a guard from Nevada and Isaiah Austin a Center from Texas. All three of these players have been rated number one for the class of 2012 at one time or another.
Andre Drummond is a 6’10 center with an NBA body that can dominate the game
defensively by blocking or altering shots. While at the same time showing some perimeter offensive skills, though not refined yet. Andre has a good feel for the game for reading defenses and making good passes to open cutters when getting doubled teamed. He likes to use the hop step when attacking the basket after facing up in the post and shows good footwork with the move. Needs to improve touch around the rim, doesn’t seem to have good natural touch due to strength and large hands but the same thing could have been said for Dwight Howard at a similar stage of his development. A big man with Andre’s body and physical attributes combined with developing skill set and feel for the game are extremely rare and are the reasons why some consider Andre the top player in the nation.
Shabazz Muhammad is a 6’6 wing player with unmatched athleticism and strength for player going into his senior year of high school. Shabazz continues to develop his perimeter skills improving his jumper and is a very reliable mid range shooter. Has improved his ball handling but needs to refine his handle and make it tighter so he won’t be as susceptible to turnovers as he moves on to the college level and professional levels. Shabazz’s greatest strength is attacking in transition where he has a great ability to find creases in the defense to get back to his left hand for a finish. Attacks the boards hard on both ends and plays with a great amount of energy and passion that you would usually find from an unranked player trying to prove himself, rather then a player who has been ranked as the top player in the country.
Isaiah Austin is a long 7’0 center that affects the game in a major way on the defensive side of the ball with his help side shot blocking ability. While being a tremendous factor on defense he is a matchup nightmare on offense with his good foot speed running the break and ability to play on the perimeter with his ball handling skills and ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter. Isaiah definitely needs to add weight and strength so he can be more of a factor in the post on offense and defense but he may not have the body type that will him to add much more weight. While Isaiah has a tremendous skill for a seven footer he has not seemed to improve much over the last year and wasn’t impacting the game like he should have been at this event.
As for my personal opinion on who is the number one player in the nation I am going to have to go with Andre Drummond due to the great impact a big man can have on the game for his team. If Drummond was still listed in the 2011 class then Shabazz would be the hands down favorite in my opinion because he is dominate on both ends of the floor every time I have seen him play. While Austin is a very intriguing player due to his size and skill set he doesn’t seem to impact the game the way Andre and Shabazz do and hasn’t improved on his weaknesses over the last year.
One thing that separates this camp from last year’s is the amount of talented big men that attended the event. Some of the top big men other then Drummond and Austin were:
Charles Mitchell 6’8 2012- A very strong player that has great foot work around the basket, moves very well for size and out quick’s other big men.
Robert Upshaw 7’0 2012- Talented post player that has some perimeter skills including surprising ball handling ability.
Cameron Ridley 6’10 2012- Big post player that presents himself well in the paint and has very good length.
Grant Jerrett 6’9 2012- Very skilled post player great moves and hands in the paint, also has perimeter skills by knocking down mid-range jumpers and putting the ball on the floor. Needs to make more of an impact on the game when he is on the floor, disappears at times.
Stefan Jankovich 6’9 2012- Has very good perimeter skills even more advanced then some perimeter players at camp, also is a solid athlete for size.
Anthony Bennett 6’8 2012- Very strong player with the size of traditional post player but has developed perimeter skills and can shoot the ball from three, also a good leaper had some very impressive windmill dunks on a couple fast breaks.
Treshaun Bolden 6’8 2013- Solid overall big man that has good fundamentals in the post, in the post he has a nice drop step while also having the ability to face up.
Zena Edsowoman 6’8 2012- Rapidly improving big man that plays extremely hard, has great improved as an athlete since last years camp.
Demetris Morant 6’8 2012- A tremendous run and jump athlete for a player of his size, amazing speed when running the floor on the break. Very raw player that needs to develop his skills.
Ben Carter 6’8 2012- Talented forward that can face up with ease and take slower players to the rim and shoot from the outside if his defender lays off.
Some of the talented wing players that were at the camp and can play multiple positions either the from perimeter or inside were:
Roscoe Allen 6’8 2012- Very skilled player for size and has developed over the past year and was a lot more aggressive at this camp compared to last years. Good shooter, ball handler, passer and has active hands on defense and can be great at a school that runs a zone the majority of the time on defense such as Syracuse or Baylor because he can play the perimeter on the zone and be a huge mismatch for defenders on offense.
Winston Sheppard 6’8 2012- Can play the point forward due to his ability to push the ball well to start breaks after getting a defensive rebound. While not being a great athlete Winston has good length and a great feel for the game.
Wannah Bail 6’7 2012- Very athletic combo forward that is raw at this point but has the ability to hit an outside jumper if left open, needs to work on his hands had trouble catching the ball at times.
Tevin Glass 6’8 2012- Athletic combo forward, with developing perimeter skills
David Andoh 6’7 2012- Very good footwork has nice jab steps and a great spin move, also is a solid athlete.
Jordan Tebbutt 6’5 2012-Doesn’t have great size for a player that prefers to play inside but has very long arms and is built like Corey Maggette. Good athlete that attacks the basket well on his drives and hits the offensive glass.
Roschon Prince 6’5 2013- Great shot blocker had a number of run down blocks on the break.
Aaron Gordon 6’6 2013- Very fluid and explosive athlete that has improved his skills greatly over the past year, good ball handler and passer on the break. Needs to work on his jump shot.
Savon Goodman 6’6 2012- Strong player that is a good athlete and is at his best when attacking the basket.
Xavier Johnson 6’7 2012- Long lefty that has very good shooting touch and prefers to spot up from the corners.
Stephen Domingo 6’7 2013- One of the surprises of the camp, a great shooter and displayed this in the Top 50 All-Star game by knocking down 7 three’s and finishing with 31 points and MVP honors.
Jabari Byrd 6’5 2013- Long and skilled wing that is an explosive athlete and has the ability to be a big time scorer.
Just because there were so many talented big men does not mean that the camp had a lack talented guards. Some the guards that impressed were:
Archie Goodwin 6’5 2012- Talented long guard that has a great ability to get to the rim with his great ball handling ability and is a good leaper who can finish above the rim. Needs to work on his outside jumper. Had a bad wrist injury in the All-Star game and hopefully he will come back to full strength soon.
Solomon Poole 6’1 2013- Strong guard that is an explosive athlete, has a lot of potential if learns to become more of a lead guard.
Ikenna Iroegbu 6’1 2013- Strong quick guard that attacks well in transition and has good court vision.
Kris Dunn 6’3 2012- Long guard that can be a point guard with his good court vision but at times can be sloppy with his passes, has a nice runner and good hesitation moves.
Tyler Lewis 6’1 2012- Smart guard that makes some impressive passes, Tyler didn’t shoot the ball well at this camp but seems to have the ability to knock down jumpers.
Dominic Artis 6’0 2012- Good ball handler that plays with a great pace and changes of speed and is always under control with the ball in his hands.
Marcus Paige 6’1 2012- Lefty true point guard that plays under control and seems to rarely shoot the ball due to always looking for teammates and was easily the best passer at the camp.
Alessandro Alberto 6’3 2012- Creative ball handler and passer, very smart player and uses angles well.
Joe Rahon 6’2 2012- Fundamentally sound player that plays hard has good strength and ability to knock down the outside jumper.
Another intriguing part of this year’s camp was seeing how some of the talented young players from the 2014 & 2015 classes competed against their older counter parts. The young players that stood out from the 2014 class were:
Stanley Johnson 6’5 2014- Talented forward that has the ability to play inside or out, has continued to develop his skills over the past year. Needs to get more arc of his jumper and take better shots but has plenty of time to work on these areas. If he continues to work should have no problem being another great player to come out of California .
Omega Harris 6’2 2014- Quick guard that has a good pull-up that he uses in transition and in the half court with equal effectiveness.
Xavier Rathan-Mayers 6’4 2014- Good finisher had some impressive lay-ups while running the wing in transition.
Shaqquan Aaron 6’6 2014- Long forward that uses his length well on defense and offense.
The only two players from the 2015 class that attended the camp were:
Tyler Dorsey 6’4 2015- Skilled player for his age with great size for his position. Seemed like an average guard during the camp which is impressive considering he was playing against player two to four years older then him.
Stephen Zimmerman 6’9 2015- Moves well for his size and has a decent skill set and was able to hang in the post versus older players.
The Pangos All-American Camp this year showed why it is one of the premier camps around by having some of the best talent in the country on hand at every position and age. I expect next year’s camp to be another great event that gives the media great access to the top players in the nation.
