“Cream of Crop”

Scouting Report

By Jeremy Orr, Head Scout

 Norvel Pelle

6’11 Senior Post

Team Odom

A very athletic big man that is one of the best shot blockers in the country. Possesses very good timing and can quick jumping ability that allows him to react quickly to block shots that others would have no chance at blocking. Can run the floor well and has no problem finishing above the rim due to his great length and jumping ability, appears that he can almost touch the top of the backboard. Right now doesn’t have much skill to his game but does have good footwork. Has a lot of room to grow as a player but is still one the top recruits in California, I expect very big things out of him in the future.

Jahii Carson

 5’11 Senior Point Guard

The Magic

One of the top point guards in the nation, not normally ranked as one of the top 5 point guards in the nation but I find it hard that there are five point guards better then him. I have not seen one player that can stay in front of him at any events that we have covered. Used to be mainly a pass first point guard when he played earlier in the year with the Compton Magic, now on the newly formed Magic team consisting of players from Arizona he seems to be a lot more aggressive. This aggressiveness hasn’t lead to bad shots or high turnovers numbers, it has lead to a player that is impossible to contain off the dribble while at the same time controls the pace of the game.

Dominique Dunning

 6’4 Senior Wing

 Compton Magic

Lefty wing player that was dominate at this showcase by scoring around the rim and shooting very well from the perimeter. Has a very shifty game of changing speeds and directions, which allows him to get back to his left hand for a lay-up or an open jumper. Already committed to the University of New Mexico and it seems they will be getting a very good player in a year.

Isaiah Austin

 7’0 Junior Center

 The Magic

Had a solid showing at this showcase still seems to have the same weaknesses and strengths, nothing new to report on him. Would have been nice to see how Isaiah would have matched up with Norvel Pelle to get a different read on how Isaiah plays against a player with his length and shot blocking ability.

 Bruce English

 6’1 Senior Guard

 Belmont Shore Gold

May have been the best player for Belmont at this event even though he is on the Gold team and not the elite Belmont team. Very smooth player that has superb athletic ability, can get to anywhere he wants in the half court and elevate over defenders for jumpers despite his size.  Bruce also has a knack for finding the creases in the defense to get into the paint and finish; while he is a very good finisher he still has the ability to make the proper passes to open teammates by using his good court vision.

Grant Jerrett

 6’8 Junior Post

 Belmont Shore

Continues to show off his great footwork and great hands that allow him to catch almost any type of pass thrown to him. Has steadily been improving on his jumper to the point that now it’s a very consistent part of his game that has to be guarded.

 Damiene Cain

 6’7 Senior Post

 Compton Magic

Strong post player that is good at using his body to get position down low, uses his good footwork for position on the block or when turning to face up slower post players. Likes to face up and hit jumpers, can hit them out to the three point line.

Gabe York

 6’3 Junior Wing

 Compton Magic

Gabe continues to shoot the ball well and got out on the break for dunks quite often. Showed a floater at this showcase when defenders closed out too hard on his jumper, this will be a very effective shot for him.

Cezar Guerrero

 6’0 Senior Point Guard

 Belmont Shore

Scored the ball very well, continues to use his great pull back dribble to create space for his pull-up jumper. Finished around the rim well, where he was able to get to almost anytime he wanted. Cezar is a feisty player that sometimes likes to flop at times to draw fouls, some people seemed to look down at him for doing this but if he can get the refs to call fouls for him then it’s a smart basketball play. Was a little bit too ball dominate at times by over dribbling and having the ball in his hands for whole positions. Cezar still could improve on his turnover numbers and seems to have trouble guarding other premier guards when he is matched up with them.

Amir Garrett

 6’6 Senior Wing

Belmont Shore

Amir continues to use his effective side step when attacking the basket to get to the rim in transition. Always gets a lot of dunks thanks to his great leaping ability mixed with his mobility. Can shoot the ball well at times but is inconsistent and doesn’t always shoot the best shots but his shooting may improve when he is in a team setting and getting shots from similar spots on the floor on a consistent basis.

 Wes Sanders

 6’6 Senior Forward

 Compton Magic

Talented forward that was effective scoring on smaller players in the post, but at the same time can attack from the perimeter. Able to attack from the perimeter due to having a good handle and can finish around the rim, where he displays his solid athleticism.

 Daniel Gomis

 6’10 Senior Post

One Dream

Athletic big man that puts out maximum effort by diving for loose balls and never giving up on a position till the whistle is blown. Not very skilled in the post and settles for too many jumpers but you have to love an athletic 6’10 player that is as active as he is.

 Chris Reyes

 6’7 Junior Post

 Belmont Gold

Solid big man with good size seems taller than 6’7 or other players at showcase are much shorter then there listed height. Has good skills and is very good at finishing around the rim.

 Christian Gore

 6’3 Senior Guard

 Danny Granger Hurricanes

Has the ability to knock down three’s, but is best at cutting and slashing where he can finish around the rim due to being a good athlete.

 Ramon Mejia

6’2 Junior Guard

 CABC

Good overall skills can handle the ball and has surprising passing ability. Has a good basketball IQ is able to find areas to get open for his jumper which he hits at a very high rate. Can handle the ball and pass but probably is not a point guard would be better suited to play off of the ball and get the ball in attacking positions. Surprisingly very few college scouts seem to be watching him at this point; every time I have seen him play he has been impressive. One particular game he had to make eight or nine three’s and nobody was watching this kid, would be a good player on a low D1 such as a Big West school or a NAIA school such as a GSAC school. Ramon doesn’t always play against the best competition with the team he is currently on but if a player has the ability then they will succeed.

 Marcus Fuggins

 6’8 Senior Post

 ISAF

Strong post player that is a good shot blocker and can run the floor well for his size. Very raw on offense at this point.

 Aaseem Dixon

 6’0 Senior Guard

 Las Vegas Dogcatchers

Continues to shoot the ball extremely well at Cabrillo High either he really loves that gym or he is just a great shooter, right now I’m leaning toward the latter.

Victor Bermudez

6’2 Senior Guard

Las Vegas Dogcatchers

Victor is the guard that seems to have the most potential of all the Dogcatcher guards due to his size and athleticism.

J’Quon Wrotten

 6’3 Senior Guard

 Las Vegas Dogcatchers

Best ball handler of all the Dogcatcher guards. Very good at cuffing the ball when driving to the basket, allowing him to protect the ball from defenders reaching in, very reminiscent of Nick Van Exel a fellow lefty.

 Chance Murray

 6’3 Sophomore Guard

 Los Angeles Rockfish

Athletic guard that has a very strong body even though he is only going into his sophomore season. Needs to improve his handle but is a player with immense potential.

 Aahmad Walker

 6’3 Junior Wing

 Los Angeles Rockfish

Long wing player that is a solid athlete can knock down shots at times and look very impressive when his shots are going down but other times can miss some jumpers badly.

 Charles Standlifer

 6’5 Senior Wing

Play Hard Play Smart

Lefty that has the ability to knock down shots with regularity, has a nice pull-up jumper. Strong athlete that has no problems finishing around the basket, very impressive player.

 Darius Nelson

6’6 Senior Forward

Team Odom

Big bodied forward that moves very well for his size. Has the ability to play inside or out due to his high skill level.

Emmanuel Ochenje

6’9 Senior Post

Team Odom

Athletic shot blocking big man that is raw on the offensive side of the ball.

 Ramon Eaton

6’8 Senior Forward

Team Odom

Long lefty forward that prefers to play inside right now but has a developing outside game.

Andre McPhail

6’7 Junior Post

Team Superstar

Very good at positioning in the post by getting very low and using his legs to clear space. Is a quick jumper and can run the floor well. May be undersized for the post has trouble getting shot off over bigger defenders should develop some perimeter skills.

Quincy Smith

6’0 Senior Guard

Team Superstar

Guard with good overall skills can do a little bit of everything. Has a smooth game that is enjoyable to watch.

Alex Caruso

6’2 Junior Wing

Texas D-1 Ambassadors

Good in transition where he displays his jumping ability and speed, solid overall skills for a wing player.

Austin Daniels

 5’9 Junior Point Guard

Triple Threat

Has good ball-handling ability that he combines with his good quickness and those two skills allow him to get into the paint where he can finish well with lay-ups or floaters.  Plays with a good pace always seems to be in control which is great for a point guard. Reminds me of a player named Marlon King who was a nice player for Biola University, in La Mirada CA.  Both are points that don’t look for the outside jumper much but prefer to drive even though they are undersized.

Joseph Soto

6’1 Senior Guard

One Dream

Solid shooter with a good basketball IQ, crafty player.

Alexis Moore

6’3 Senior Guard

Compton Magic

Long athletic guard that has good defensive skills.

Kory Alford

6’4 Senior Wing

Danny Granger Hurricanes

Smart player that has good shooting ability.

Odera Nweke

6’5 Senior Forward

Danny Granger Hurricanes

Forward that can play multiple positions due to his good skill level. Good leaper with a solid frame. Has good offensive fundamentals but struggles to put together two good plays in a row. Seems to have a lot of untapped potential, could be a diamond in the ruff considering he doesn’t start on his team.

Dion Hudson

5’10 Senior Point Guard

Los Angeles Rockfish

Point guard with blazing quickness that is hard to stop in transition.

Blake Vedder

7’3 Grad Post

West Coast Elite

Prefers to play on the perimeter due to his thin frame, has a decent jumper and moves very well for a 7’3 player.

Dylan Garrity

6’0 Senior Guard

Belmont Shore Gold

Has good court vision and makes very good passes, could look for his shot more often.
